In 2005, West Lothian Council carried out a study of all green spaces. The whole area was classified as "Natural / Semi-natural Greenspace", as shown here. The full document can be found on here on West Lothian Council's website.
West Lothian Council then decided to build a new park in the area, after a lack of such provision was identified in the results of the study leading to the West Lothian Council’s Open Space Strategy.

Work on the new Eliburn Park is now underway. It will comprise 3 football pitches, a kick-about area, a pavilion, two car parks, and zones for children of different age groups.

Please click here to see a map of the park. The area between the football pitches and the play areas is on an incline, down to the burn. The football pitches will be flat and landscaped, although they will be available for bookings by clubs and associations (they will have to pay to use these facilities).

The leaflet introducing Eliburn Park read that the area would be "a large, green haven in Livingston, where people can relax, play sport, meet friends, walk the dog, have a picnic, play in the playpark, go fishing and observe the local wildlife".
This is not the case. It is clear that Eliburn Park, as it is planned, will not provide a natural open green space, which is at present a haven for our local wildlife. Any more landscaping and construction will undoubtedly seriously damage flora, fauna, and their habitats.
